Quick Answers
- Albert doesn't pull your credit report for Instant, so setting it up won't affect your score. Albert does obtain other information from consumer reporting agencies to set your limit.
- For the Instant advance, Albert says it won't report the amount advanced to a consumer reporting agency, won't pursue debt collection, and won't sell an unpaid advance to a third party.
- Albert Loans work differently: checking rates uses a soft pull, applying uses a hard pull, and Albert reports your loan payments to at least one major credit bureau.
What Is Albert?
Albert is a money app that combines a cash account, savings, investing, and borrowing tools. Its paid plans cost $19.99 a month (Standard) or $39.99 a month (Genius or Family), and Standard includes credit score monitoring based on VantageScore® 3.0 from Experian®.
Albert says a subscription isn't required to use Instant or to take out an Albert Loan. That matters here, because those borrowing products are the only parts of Albert that touch your credit.
Which Albert Products Can Affect Your Credit?
Instant Advance
The Instant advance sends funds to your Albert Cash account, and Albert says there are no late fees or interest on it. Advances are due 6 days after you take them, and you can request an extension of up to 7 days in the app.
If you don't repay on time, Albert may suspend your access to new advances. It says it won't collect on the debt, sell it, or report the amount advanced to a credit bureau.
Instant Line of Credit
Albert also describes Instant as an unsecured line of credit with limits from $25 to $1,000. Draw fees may apply each time you advance, and late fees may apply if you miss a due date. Albert's help center doesn't say whether this product is reported to the credit bureaus, so read your agreement in the app before you borrow.
Albert Loans
Albert Loans are fixed-rate, unsecured personal loans from $1,000 to $10,000, issued by FinWise Bank, Member FDIC. These are the Albert product most likely to show up on your credit report.
How Albert Loans Affect Your Credit Score
- Checking your rate: Albert uses a soft credit pull, which may appear on your report but doesn't affect your score.
- Applying: If you submit an application, Albert requests a hard pull from one or more credit bureaus, which can lower your score slightly.
- Repaying: Albert reports on-time, late, and missed payments, defaults, and payoff to consumer reporting agencies such as Experian, TransUnion, or Equifax.
- On your report: You may see FinWise Bank or Albert listed as the lender, depending on who originated your loan.
On-time loan payments can help your credit history, while late or missed payments can hurt it.
How to Keep Albert From Hurting Your Credit
Know Which Product You're Using
The Instant advance, the Instant line of credit, and Albert Loans have different fees and terms. Check the screen you're on before you accept any funds.
Borrow Only What You Can Repay
Even when an advance isn't reported, repaying late can cut off access for 30 to 90 days or more. With a loan, a missed payment can go straight to your credit report.
Apply for Loans Sparingly
Use the soft-pull rate check first. Submit a full application only when you're ready, since each hard pull can ding your score.
Ways to Improve Your Credit Score
Our guide on how to increase your credit score goes deeper, but these habits matter most:
- Pay every bill on time. Payment history carries the most weight in your score, and automatic payments help you avoid misses.
- Keep card balances low. Lower utilization helps your score. See our tips to lower your credit card utilization rate.
- Limit new hard inquiries. Use prequalification tools when you can, and space out applications.
- Review your reports. Check your free reports at AnnualCreditReport.com and dispute any errors.
The Bottom Line
Albert's Instant advance doesn't involve a credit report pull, and Albert says it doesn't report advances to the bureaus. Albert Loans are reported, so they can help or hurt your score depending on how you repay.
If you want to build credit, a credit card you pay in full each month is a common route. Kudos shows your approval odds before you apply, and the free Kudos Card Explorer lets you compare cards for building credit. For other cash advance apps, see our guides to Cleo and Cash App.
