Does Planet Fitness Report to Credit Bureaus?
A Planet Fitness membership is not a credit account, and Planet Fitness does not say anywhere in its membership and billing FAQ that it reports payments to Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion. Paying your dues on time will not build credit.
Your credit can be affected if you stop paying and the unpaid balance is sent to a collection agency, which may report it to the credit bureaus.
How Does a Planet Fitness Membership Relate to Your Credit?
Planet Fitness bills monthly dues and, on many memberships, an annual fee. Planet Fitness says payment methods vary by location and that many clubs require monthly dues to be drafted from a checking account by electronic funds transfer.
Because you are paying for a service rather than borrowing money, your membership does not appear on your credit report as an account. The exception is an unpaid balance that ends up in collections.
When Could a Planet Fitness Balance Show Up on Your Credit Report?
If you stop paying dues without properly ending your membership, the club can keep billing you and the overdue balance can grow. Stopping the payment at your bank is not one of the cancellation methods Planet Fitness lists, so it may not end your membership.
If the balance is not resolved, it may be turned over to a third-party collection agency. Collection agencies can report unpaid accounts to the credit bureaus, and there is no set Planet Fitness timeline for when that happens.
How Can a Collection Account Affect Your Credit Score?
A collection account is a negative mark that can lower your score, and it can stay on your credit report for up to seven years from the original delinquency. Paying it off resolves the debt, but the record can still appear on your report.
For more detail, see our guides on how long collections stay on your credit report and how to pay a debt collection agency.
How Do You Cancel Planet Fitness Without Hurting Your Credit?
Planet Fitness says you can end your membership by sending written notice by mail to your home club, visiting the club in person, or using the member portal online. Policies can vary by location based on state and local rules.
- Give enough notice: To stop your next monthly bill, the club must receive your request at least 8 days before your billing date. The same 8-day rule applies to the annual fee date.
- Check for a buyout fee: If your membership has a minimum term and you end it early, Planet Fitness lists a $58 buyout fee.
- Pay any overdue balance: Planet Fitness does not allow partial payments on an overdue balance online, so visit your home club if you need help.
- Keep proof: Save a copy of your cancellation request and confirmation.
How Can You Keep Your Planet Fitness Account in Good Standing?
- Check your billing dates and balance online or in the PF App under My Billing Info & Balance.
- Update your billing information there if your bank account or card changes.
- Contact your home club about billing questions, or Member Services if your club is closed.
If you can pay a balance or update billing by card, a rewards card you pay in full can earn a little back. Kudos recommends the best card in your wallet at checkout. You can also track gym dues alongside other bills with our guide to budgeting for recurring subscriptions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Paying Planet Fitness On Time Build Credit?
No. Planet Fitness does not say it reports membership payments to the credit bureaus, so on-time dues do not add positive history to your credit report.
Can Planet Fitness Send My Account to Collections?
An unpaid balance can be sent to a collection agency, which may report it to the credit bureaus. Resolving the balance with your home club early is the best way to avoid that.
Can I Pay Planet Fitness With a Credit Card?
Planet Fitness says you can make a payment online or in the PF App using a debit or credit card. Many clubs still require monthly dues to be drafted from a checking account. For in-club payment options, see does Planet Fitness take Apple Pay.
Is There a Fee to Cancel Planet Fitness?
Planet Fitness lists a $58 buyout fee if a membership with a minimum term is ended before the contract term is up. Check your membership agreement for your terms.
Get More From Your Credit Cards
Your gym membership will not build credit, but how you use your cards can. Kudos recommends the card in your wallet that earns the most at checkout and shows your card rewards in one place, so your everyday spending earns more.
Gym memberships are one of the recurring charges that are easy to lose track of. Kudos Premium adds subscription tracking that helps you spot subscriptions you no longer use and cancel unwanted ones with one tap. For Planet Fitness itself, follow the club's cancellation steps above and keep your confirmation.
