Quick Answer
Often, yes, but it depends on who collects the tax. Many DMVs and county tax offices take credit cards with a service or convenience fee, and dealers set their own card policies. Some sellers, like Tesla, don't accept cards for the final payment that includes sales tax.
Should You Pay Automobile Sales Tax With a Credit Card?
Benefits
- Rewards: A large tax bill can earn meaningful rewards or help you reach a welcome offer's minimum spend.
- Timing: Paying by card gives you until your statement due date to pay without interest.
- Convenience: A card can be simpler than getting a certified check.
Costs
- Processing fees: For example, the California DMV lists a 1.95% service fee for credit card payments online, at kiosks, and by phone, and 2.1% in offices.
- Interest: Carrying the balance at your card's APR can cost far more than the rewards are worth.
- Less available credit: A big charge raises your utilization until you pay it down.
How to Pay Automobile Sales Tax With a Credit Card
- Find out who collects the tax. At a dealership, sales tax is usually part of your purchase paperwork. In a private sale, you typically pay when you title the vehicle. In Texas, for example, the 6.25% motor vehicle sales tax on a private sale is paid when the vehicle is titled, and you have 30 days from the date of sale to title it.
- Confirm card acceptance and the fee. Payment options vary. Texas says acceptable forms of payment vary by county, and TxDMV says credit cards are accepted for in-person transactions with an additional convenience fee but not for transactions by mail.
- Do the math. Compare the fee with what your card earns (see the example below).
- Pay and keep your receipt. Save the confirmation with your title and registration records.
- Pay the card off in full. Paying by the due date keeps interest from erasing your rewards.
Example: Fee vs. Rewards
On $2,000 of sales tax, a 1.95% fee costs $39. A card earning 2% cash back on that charge would return $40, so you'd come out about $1 ahead. With a 1.5% card, you'd earn $30 and lose $9.
Calculation formulated by Kudos, based on a hypothetical $2,000 tax bill, the California DMV's 1.95% online card service fee, and flat 2% and 1.5% cash back rates.
Impact On Your Credit Score
- Credit utilization: A large charge raises your utilization ratio until the balance is paid, which can lower your score temporarily.
- Payment history: Paying the bill on time protects your score, while a late payment can hurt it.
- New card applications: Opening a new card for the tax bill usually adds a hard inquiry.
Alternative Ways To Pay Automobile Sales Tax
Pay at the Dealership
When you buy from a dealer, sales tax is typically included in the purchase and handled with the title paperwork. In Texas, the dealer must file the title application. Ask the dealer which payment methods it accepts for the full amount.
Pay the DMV or County Office Directly
For private sales, you usually pay when you title and register the vehicle. Bank account payments can avoid card fees; the California DMV, for example, lists no service fee for bank account payments.
Roll It Into Your Loan
Ask your lender whether taxes and fees can be included in your auto loan. That spreads out the cost, but you'll pay interest on it.
Choose the Right Card to Pay Automobile Sales Tax
A card only makes sense here if its rewards or welcome offer outweigh the processing fee. Flat-rate cash back cards and cards with a welcome offer you can earn with this purchase are the usual candidates.
