July 1, 2025

Upgrade added another card to its lineup, and this one is easier to understand than anything else the fintech has shipped. The Upgrade OneCard Essentials pays 3% cash back on gas, groceries, streaming, and utilities, 1% on everything else, and charges no annual fee. There is no rewards cap and no checking account requirement buried in the fine print. The catch is that it's currently available by invitation only.

  • $0 annual fee
  • 3% back on gas, groceries, streaming and subscriptions, and utilities, with no cap
  • 1% back on everything else
  • No welcome bonus
  • Visa Signature benefits, invitation only

How the Rewards Break Down

Four categories earn 3%, and Upgrade defines them broadly:

  • Gas: service stations and EV charging
  • Groceries: supermarkets, specialty markets, and convenience stores
  • Streaming and subscriptions: Netflix, Spotify, phone service, and similar recurring charges
  • Utilities: power, phone, and internet bills

Everything else earns 1%. Target and Walmart are excluded from the 3% categories, which is standard for grocery bonuses since both usually code as superstores rather than supermarkets. Rewards don't expire while the account stays in good standing.

Kudos Tip

Kudos's Card Explore Tool shows how an uncapped 3% category card compares to what you're already earning, and Kudos flags when a purchase won't code the way you expect, like a grocery run at Target or Walmart that misses the bonus entirely.

The Missing Cap Is the Real Story

Compare it to the standard Upgrade OneCard, which pays 3% on a similar category list plus restaurants and bars, and 2% on everything else. That looks strictly better on paper. Two things break the comparison.

First, the standard OneCard caps 3% earnings at $500 in rewards per calendar year, then drops to 2%. Reaching that ceiling takes roughly $16,700 of category spend a year, or about $1,390 a month across gas, groceries, dining, and bills. Plenty of households clear it.

Second, the standard OneCard's 2% and 3% rates require an active Rewards Checking or Rewards Checking Preferred account with Upgrade, defined as one receiving at least $1,000 in direct deposits every month. Link an outside bank instead and you earn a flat 1.5% on everything.

So the honest split looks like this:

  • OneCard Essentials: 3% uncapped on four categories, 1% base, no checking requirement, no welcome bonus
  • Standard OneCard: 3% capped at $500 in rewards per year on a wider category list, 2% base with active Upgrade checking (1.5% without), $200 welcome bonus through Rewards Checking Preferred

Run the math on a household spending $1,500 a month in those four categories. Essentials earns $540 a year. The standard OneCard earns $500 at 3%, then drops to 2% for the rest of the year, and only if the direct deposit requirement is met every single month. If your spending clusters in gas, groceries, streaming, and utilities and you'd rather not move your paycheck to a fintech checking account, Essentials wins.

More:

What It Costs

No annual fee. That part is confirmed.

Upgrade doesn't publish an APR range for the Essentials card, which is normal for an invitation-only product where rates arrive with the offer. For reference, the standard OneCard runs 14.99% to 29.99% depending on creditworthiness, with the lowest rates requiring autopay, plus up to 5% for balance transfers, up to 3% for foreign transactions, and up to $29 for a late payment. Expect Essentials pricing in similar territory, but confirm your own terms before carrying a balance.

Worth saying plainly: 3% back means nothing next to a 25% APR. The category rates only pay off if you clear the balance every month.

One more thing to watch. Upgrade lists Pay Now, Pay in 4, and Pay Over Time on the product page, but all three are labeled as planned enhancements that may not be available when your account opens. Treat this as a normal credit card until those ship.

How It Compares

The 1% base rate is what keeps Essentials from being a one-card wallet. These pair with it, or replace it:

The pattern: Essentials wins on uncapped category earning, and loses everywhere outside those four categories. A flat 2% card covers that gap.

The Bottom Line

The OneCard Essentials is the most legible card Upgrade has released. No caps, no banking relationship required, no rewards structure that shifts depending on the month. The tradeoffs are a 1% base rate that punishes anything outside the four categories, no welcome bonus, and pricing you can't see until an invitation shows up.

Good fit: households with heavy, predictable category spend. Two cars, a family grocery bill, a stack of subscriptions, and utility bills clearing $400 a month add up fast at 3% with no ceiling. Skip it if your spending is mostly dining, travel, or general retail, or if Target and Walmart are where you buy groceries.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5. A genuinely uncapped 3% on four everyday categories with no annual fee and no checking requirement, held back by a weak base rate, no welcome bonus, and invitation-only access with undisclosed pricing.

Rates, terms, and availability are set by the issuer and subject to change. Confirm current details in your offer before applying.
