Why Tracking Cashback Across Multiple Cards Is Harder Than It Should Be
July 1, 2025
The advice to "use multiple cards to maximize cash back" is everywhere. What's talked about far less is how much manual overhead that advice creates — and how much of the resulting cash back never actually gets claimed.
Why This Gets Complicated Fast
- Rotating categories: Discover's 5% categories for Q3 2026 cover gas stations, EV charging, public transportation, flights, and drugstores — capped at $1,500 in combined spend, and only after you manually activate each quarter.
- Separate caps everywhere: a grocery card with its own annual cap, a dining card with its own quarterly limit, and merchant offers that each need individual activation.
- No unified view: Chase, Amex, Citi, Discover, and Bank of America each have separate apps and separate rules for whether rewards expire, roll over, or reset.
The Real Cost of Missed Activations
Industry estimates on unredeemed card-linked offers routinely run into the billions of dollars a year — money that was technically available to cardholders who simply didn't click "activate" before their statement closed. A quarterly 5% category is worthless if you forget to turn it on.
This is exactly what Kudos's Wallet is built for — it tracks every card's caps, reset dates, and active offers in one view (the same feature behind Kudos's Hidden Perks), and Kudos Boost automatically stacks extra cash back on top at checkout, so nothing quietly expires unused.
The Fix
None of this means cash back cards are a bad deal — they're not. It's that the current system asks you to do tracking work the issuers have already automated on their end. Categories reset on a schedule the bank controls; activation buttons live in an app you have to remember to open.
