Q4 2026 Credit Card 5% Rotating Categories: Chase Freedom, Discover it, and Citi Dividend
September 11, 2026

The last quarter of the year is also the most expensive one, which makes this the rotating category lineup worth paying attention to. From October 1 through December 31, 2026, Chase, Discover and Citi are all paying elevated cash back on the exact spending the holidays force on you anyway. Dining shows up on all three. Here is what to activate, where, and how to stack it.
Chase Freedom and Chase Freedom Flex: Q4 2026
Chase Freedom and Chase Freedom Flex® cardholders earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in the following categories from October 1 through December 31, 2026:
- Grocery stores, excluding Walmart and Target
- Dining, including takeaway and delivery
- Donations to the American Red Cross
Grocery is the one that matters most this quarter. Thanksgiving and December cooking land squarely inside it, and the $1,500 cap is easier to fill in October through December than in any other three months of the year. Dining is where the Freedom Flex pulls ahead of its sibling. The card already earns 3% on dining year-round, so the quarterly bonus stacks on top of that rather than replacing it, for 7% total on restaurants from October 1 through December 31. That stacking does not apply to the original Chase Freedom, which is no longer available to new applicants.
The Red Cross category is a genuine quirk. Donations made directly through official American Red Cross channels earn 5%, which is worth knowing if year-end giving is already on your list.
The $1,500 cap works out to a maximum of $75 in bonus cash back for the quarter. After that, everything drops back to 1%.
Activate at ChaseBonus.com. The activation deadline is December 14, 2026. Unlike Discover, Chase allows retroactive earnings as long as you activate before the deadline, so a late activation still picks up your October spending.
Cards that qualify include the Chase Freedom Flex®, Chase Freedom, and the Chase Freedom® Student credit card.

Discover it Cash Back: Q4 2026
Discover cardholders earn 5% Cashback Bonus on up to $1,500 in purchases in the following categories from October 1 through December 31, 2026:
- Restaurants
- Entertainment
- Utilities
Entertainment is new to the Discover 5% lineup, and the timing is deliberate. Autumn sport, new film releases, holiday concerts and seasonal events all fall inside the window.
Utilities is the quiet one, and it is the category most likely to fill your cap without any change in behaviour. Electricity, water, internet and phone service all qualify. One warning before you move every bill onto the card: some utility providers charge a processing fee for card payments, and a 2% or 3% fee cancels out most of what you would earn. Check the fee first, and only switch the bills that are free to pay by card.
Discover does not allow retroactive earnings. You have to activate before you spend, or the purchase earns 1%. Activation is open from October 1 through December 31 at Discover's Cashback Calendar, but there is no reason to wait.
Cards that qualify include the Discover it Cash Back, Discover it® Student Cash Back, and the NHL Discover it.

Dining sits on Chase, Discover and Citi at the same time this quarter, so the right card at dinner depends on which cap you have already filled. Add your cards to Kudos and we will tell you which one to use at checkout, and track how much of each $1,500 cap is left.
Citi Dividend: Q4 2026
Citi Dividend cardholders earn 5% back in two categories for Q4 2026:
- Restaurants
- Citi Travel, covering hotels, car rentals and attractions booked through Citi Travel
Citi works differently from the other two, and the difference is worth understanding. Instead of a $1,500 quarterly cap, Citi Dividend runs a $6,000 annual cap across the whole year. You are not forced to spend evenly by quarter, so if you have headroom left in the annual pool, a heavy December can soak up far more than $1,500.
Two limits to know. Citi Travel covers hotels, car rentals and attractions only, and air travel does not qualify, so book flights on something else. The restaurant category excludes restaurants located inside hotels, stadiums and grocery stores, along with bakeries, caterers and third-party delivery services, which is a narrower definition than Chase or Discover use.
Enrolment opened on September 10, 2026. Activate at Citi's Dividend Quarterly Offer page.
Cards that qualify include the Citi Dividend Card, Citi® Dividend Platinum Select® MasterCard, Citi Dividend World MasterCard, Citi Dividend Card for College Students, and the Citi® Dividend American Express®.

Nusenda Platinum Cash Rewards: Q4 2026
Nusenda Platinum Cash Rewards Credit Card cardholders get the broadest lineup of the quarter: grocery, dining, gas, drugstores, discount stores, wholesale clubs and book stores, on up to $1,875 in purchases from October 1 through December 31, 2026.
That cap is larger than Chase's or Discover's, and the category list is wide enough that most ordinary spending falls somewhere inside it. If you hold this card, it is the easiest $1,875 of the year to fill.

Dining Is on All Three This Quarter
This is the part worth planning around. Chase, Discover and Citi have all landed on restaurants for Q4 at the same time, which does not usually happen.
- Chase Freedom Flex: 7% on dining, capped inside the shared $1,500
- Discover it: 5% on restaurants, capped inside its own $1,500
- Citi Dividend: 5% on restaurants, drawing on the $6,000 annual pool
The caps are separate, so holding more than one card means more than one bucket of bonus spending. Max out Chase and Discover alone and that is $3,000 of elevated spending and $150 in bonus cash back for the quarter, before Citi adds anything.
A sensible order for restaurant spending, if you hold all three: Freedom Flex first, because 7% beats everything else on the table. Then Discover, because its cap is use-it-or-lose-it and resets on January 1. Then Citi, because the annual pool is more forgiving about when you spend it.
Use the non-dining categories to fill the rest of each cap. Chase clears through grocery, Discover clears through utilities, and both get you to $75 without thinking about it.
How Kudos Helps You Maximize These Rewards
Knowing the categories is one thing. Remembering which card to pull out while you are standing at a checkout in December is where most people lose the money.
Kudos links the cards you already have and tells you which one earns the most at the moment you pay, whether you are at the grocery store, settling a dinner bill or paying a utility.
For Q4 2026, this means:
- Knowing when to reach for your Freedom Flex at dinner and your Discover it at the cinema
- Tracking how much of each $1,500 cap you have used, so you stop spending on a maxed-out card
- Catching the categories you would otherwise forget, like Red Cross donations and utility bills
Making the Most of Q4 2026 Categories
A few things to get right before October 1.
- Activate everything now. Chase, Discover and Citi all require manual activation. Discover in particular will not backdate, so an unactivated purchase earns 1% and there is no fixing it afterwards.
- Watch the grocery exclusions. Chase excludes Walmart and Target from its grocery category, which are exactly where a lot of holiday shopping happens. Split the trip or use a different card there.
- Check utility fees before switching. A provider that charges 2.5% to accept a card wipes out half of Discover's 5%.
- Remember the caps are per card, not per household. Two people each holding a Freedom Flex have two separate $1,500 caps.
- Do not spend to fill a cap. $75 is the most any one of these is worth in a quarter. It is not a reason to buy anything you were not already buying.
