The Hidden Rules That Decide Your Credit Card Approval Odds
July 1, 2025

Every credit card application triggers a hard inquiry, whether you're approved or not — and issuers weigh far more than your credit score when deciding. A handful of unpublished, issuer-specific rules can sink an application regardless of how strong your score is.
The Three Rules Nobody Publishes
- Chase's 5/24 rule: generally denies applicants who've opened five or more personal credit cards, from any issuer, in the past 24 months — even cards that have since been closed.
- Amex's once-per-lifetime rule: you can only earn a specific card's welcome bonus once, ever, since 2014 — you can still get approved again, just without the bonus.
- Capital One's 1/6 rule: generally one new card approval every six months, and a cap of two personal Capital One cards at any given time.
Why Your Credit Score Doesn't Protect You
None of these rules show up on your credit report, and a high score doesn't override any of them — a 780 FICO score won't save a 5/24-blocked Chase application, and a clean payment history won't unlock a second Amex bonus.
This is exactly what Kudos's Approval Odds feature is built to solve — it checks your actual credit profile against issuer-specific rules like these before you apply, so you can see your real chances instead of guessing from your credit score alone.
What to Check Before You Apply
Look at how many cards you've opened recently and with which issuers, check whether your target card has known velocity rules, and use a soft-pull pre-qualification tool where available. It won't guarantee approval, but it avoids burning a hard inquiry on an application you were never going to win.
