Your Marriott Boundless Free Night Certificate Is Sitting Unused. Here's How to Actually Use It.
July 1, 2025

If you carry the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card, you're sitting on a free hotel night worth $300 to $400, and there's a good chance you haven't touched it.
The card has a $95 annual fee. Every year, on your card anniversary, Marriott deposits a 35,000 point Free Night Award into your account automatically. No enrollment, no spending threshold, it just shows up. That single certificate covers a night at most Category 1 to 5 Marriott properties, which is exactly the range where prices typically land between $300 and $400. Use it once and the card has paid for itself three or four times over.
The problem isn't the value. It's the shelf life.
The Certificate Expires One Year From Issue
The certificate lands in your account within about eight weeks of your card anniversary, and it expires exactly one year from the date it's issued. Not one year from your anniversary, one year from when it actually posts.
This is where most people lose it. The certificate sits there while you wait for the "right" trip, a milestone weekend, a big vacation worth saving it for. Then life gets busy, the year passes, and it quietly expires. There's no extension and no grace period.
The fix is simple: stop treating it like a reward and start treating it like cash with a deadline. Any weekend away inside the window beats letting $300 to $400 disappear.

Where to Actually Use It
The certificate is capped at Category 5 properties, so picking the right hotel matters. Some reliable brands to check within that category:
- W Hotels in solid city or resort locations
- Westin properties in major metros
- Sheraton flagship locations
- Renaissance hotels in gateway cities
These brands consistently have Category 5 options that price out right around what the certificate covers, so you're not leaving value on the table or scrambling to make up a gap.
You Can Now Top It Off
As of March 2026, Marriott lets you add up to 15,000 of your own points on top of the certificate, bringing your total buying power to 50,000 points a night. That opens the door to a meaningfully nicer property or a slightly pricier location if the exact Category 5 hotel you want is a bit out of reach on the base certificate alone.
This is worth checking before you book. If a property you're eyeing is just out of range, a small top off can be the difference between booking it and passing on it.
The Bigger Point
Most annual fee cards are already paid for. You made the decision, the fee posted, the benefits exist whether you use them or not. The only thing left is claiming what you already bought.
The Marriott Boundless makes this especially easy to forget because the certificate doesn't require any activity to earn. It just appears. That convenience cuts both ways: it's also easy to let it sit untouched until it's gone.
Check your Marriott account now. If you have a certificate with an expiration date coming up, book something. It doesn't need to be a big trip. It just needs to happen before the date passes.
Kudos tracks every credit and benefit across all your cards in one place, including certificate expiration dates, so you're not relying on memory to catch this before it's too late.
