Citi Ends the 48-Month Rule for Strata Premier Bonuses

Citi rewrote the fine print on its Strata cards, and the change is a big one for Citi Strata Premier bonus eligibility. The welcome bonus on the Citi Strata Premier® Card used to reopen every 48 months. Under the new terms, if you have ever held the card, the bonus is off the table.

Bonus rules differ by issuer. Our guide lays out the application limits at Chase, Amex, Citi and more. Read the credit card application rules guide.
What Changed in Citi Strata Premier Bonus Eligibility
The old offer terms blocked the bonus only if you had received a new account bonus on a Citi Premier® or Citi Strata Premier® account in the past 48 months. Wait four years and you were eligible again. The new languageis shorter and stricter. The bonus is not available if you "currently have or previously had" a Citi Strata Premier® or a Citi Premier® account. There is no look-back window at all. Citi also added that you may not be eligible based on your history of opening, closing and using credit cards. That gives Citi room to decline a bonus even if you have never held the card.
Kudos keeps a running record of the cards in your wallet and what each one earns, so you can see at a glance which Citi cards you already hold before you apply for another.

Which Citi Cards Are Affected?
The once-per-lifetime wording appears across the Strata lineup: the Citi Strata Premier® Card, the no-annual-fee Citi Strata℠ Card and the Citi Strata Elite℠ Card. Each card is judged separately, so holding one Strata card does not block the bonus on another.
Other Citi cards have not moved yet. The Citi Double Cash® Card offer page still uses the 48-month rule. So do Citi's American Airlines cards, including the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard®, the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Legend Mastercard®, the Citi® / AAdvantage® Globe™ Mastercard®, and the American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp℠ Card. If the lifetime rule spreads, those are the likeliest next candidates.
Citi just added a new airline partner. Japan Airlines is now a 1:1 ThankYou transfer option. See the Citi Japan Airlines details.
Will Citi Warn You Before You Apply?
No. Citi does not show a pop-up telling you that you are ineligible. It can approve the application and simply never pay the bonus.
That makes your own records the only safeguard. Before you apply, check whether you have ever had a Citi Premier or Strata Premier account, including one you product changed into or out of. Also note that "previously had" counts the older Citi Premier® branding, not just the current Strata Premier.
Should You Apply for the Strata Premier Now?
If you have never held either card, nothing changes for you today. What does change is the stakes. You get one shot at this bonus, ever. If a higher offer shows up later, you will not be able to wait for it after opening the card now. Card offers move often, so a quick check of recent offer history before you apply is worth the five minutes.
If you already had the card, the welcome bonus is gone, but the card itself can still earn its keep. It pays 3 points per $1 at restaurants, supermarkets, gas and EV charging stations, and on air travel and other hotel purchases, plus 10 points per $1 on hotels, car rentals and attractions booked through Citi Travel.
The Bottom Line
Citi has joined the issuers that limit bonuses to one per card, per lifetime, at least on the Strata family. American Express has used once-per-lifetime language on its Welcome Offers for years. Chase moved its Sapphire cards to similar "have or had this card" terms in 2025. If you are weighing a Strata card, treat the welcome offer as a single opportunity and time it carefully. If you have held one before, judge it on its earning rates alone.
