Minimum Spend Requirement: How to Hit It Without Overspending
September 27, 2026

A minimum spend requirement is the amount you must charge on a new card within a set time to earn its welcome offer. Miss it and the bonus does not post, which makes it the most important number in any offer.
This guide explains how the requirement works, how to turn it into a monthly plan, and how to stay on track without buying things you do not need.
Several cards? Keep every requirement and deadline visible. Read the tracking guide.
What Is a Minimum Spend Requirement?
A minimum spend requirement sets how much you need to spend, and by when, to unlock a welcome offer. A typical example is $500 in the first 3 months or $3,000 in the first 6 months. Issuers use it to reward customers who will actually use the card. Higher offers usually carry higher requirements. Many issuers also set the requirement at a level that matches the offer's size. If a requirement looks far above your normal spending, it usually means the card is aimed at higher spenders.
Requirements are set card by card. A premium travel card may ask for several thousand dollars, while an everyday cash back card may ask for a few hundred. Compare the requirement with your own monthly spending before you apply, and treat the offer as one input, not the only one.
Divide the requirement into weekly targets and check your total every Sunday.
Plan the whole wallet. Decide which card handles which spending. Read the rewards strategy guide.
How Minimum Spend Requirements Work
The clock normally starts when your account opens, not when the card arrives. That means a few days of the window can pass before you can make a first purchase.
Most issuers count purchases and do not count cash advances or balance transfers. Returns and disputed charges can reduce your total, so keep a small cushion. Always read the offer terms for what counts.
Pending transactions and slow-posting charges can delay your total. Spend toward the end of the window carefully, because a purchase that posts after the deadline may not count.
Keep a note of your application date and the deadline. Open the account at a time when you expect normal spending, such as before a month with a big planned bill rather than after one.

How Do You Calculate What You Need to Spend Each Month?
Divide the requirement by the number of months and compare it with your normal spending. For $4,000 over 3 months, you need about $1,333 a month, or about $308 a week.
If your usual card spending is already near that number, you only need to move purchases. If it is far below, the offer may not be worth chasing.
Try a simple worksheet: write the requirement, subtract what you have already charged, and divide what is left by the number of weeks remaining. Update it every week so a slow month does not catch you by surprise.
Watch for the opposite risk too. If you will clear the requirement early, stop routing extra purchases to that card and send spending back to your best everyday card.
For larger requirements, build a short list of the charges you can reasonably move: rent or mortgage where a card is accepted without a fee, groceries, fuel, subscriptions, medical bills and travel. Add each one with a rough monthly amount and see whether the list reaches your target before you apply.
Which Regular Bills Can You Move to the New Card?
Start with the spending you already do: groceries, gas, phone, internet, streaming, insurance and utilities where cards are accepted. Moving them costs nothing extra.
Bills with fixed amounts are the easiest to move because they repeat on a schedule. Set them to auto-pay on the new card, and confirm each one posts as a purchase before you count it.
You can also pay for shared costs, such as a group dinner or a family gift, and be reimbursed by friends. The charge counts and your own spending does not need to rise.
A no annual fee card that earns steady rewards on everyday purchases keeps the cost of the requirement low. A few examples to compare:
[[ CARD_LIST * {"ids": ["3041", "580", "2894", "260"]} ]]
Check each card's current terms, and remember to pay the balance in full each month so interest never cancels out the bonus.
Recurring subscriptions are another easy win. Switch each one to the new card the day your account opens so every month of the window counts.
How Do You Time a Large Purchase?
If you already plan a big purchase, such as a flight, appliance, tuition payment or annual insurance premium, time the application so the charge falls inside the window.
Do not buy something you would not otherwise buy. A $200 bonus is not a win if you spend $1,000 on items you did not need.
Annual or semiannual bills are good candidates. Car insurance, property tax where cards are accepted, and tuition can each cover a large share of a requirement in a single payment. Check for card payment fees first, because a processing fee can erase the value of a bonus.
If you are not planning anything large, that is fine. Steady everyday spending alone can meet a modest requirement, and there is no reason to force a purchase just to reach a number.
What Happens If You Miss the Deadline?
If you fall short, the issuer usually does not award the bonus. Some will not extend the window, so contact them early if something unexpected happens.
Never chase the requirement with a balance you cannot pay off. Interest on a carried balance quickly outweighs a welcome offer.
If you cannot reach the requirement, think about whether a different card would have fit better. A lower requirement on a card you will keep using is often worth more than a bigger offer you strain to earn.
Keep your documentation. If you believe you met the requirement and the bonus did not post, contact the issuer with your statement showing the qualifying purchases.
If you are close but not there, look for planned purchases you can pull forward a few days. Only do this for things you would have bought anyway, and never at the cost of paying interest.
How to Track Progress Across Multiple Cards
If you hold several cards, it gets harder to see which one is still working toward a requirement. Put each deadline on your calendar the day you apply, or let a tracker do the counting for you.
Track Your Welcome Offer With Kudos
With Kudos Premium, Kudos tracks your progress toward each card's minimum spend requirement automatically. Setup takes a few minutes:
- Add and connect your card. Add the new card to your Kudos Wallet and connect the account so purchases count toward your total automatically.
- Set the open date. Open the card in your wallet, find Card opened under Account overview, and tap Set date. Kudos uses this date to start the clock, which matters because the window usually begins when the account opens.
- Check your progress. Tap the card to see how much you have spent, how much is left, and how many days remain.
Kudos also sends alerts as you approach a deadline or get close to the threshold, so a slow month does not catch you off guard.
What If Your Offer Is Different From the Public One?
Targeted, referral, and in-branch offers often come with a different bonus, spend amount, or timeframe. In the card's Welcome offer section, click the pencil icon on the tracker and enter your offer's exact terms. Our custom offer guide walks through the details, including offers that combine points with a statement credit.
Let Kudos Route Purchases to the New Card
At checkout, Kudos recommends your new card when it is the best one to use, so purchases you already planned count toward the requirement. You can also review your recurring payments in Kudos to spot bills worth moving. For the full setup, see how to track your sign-up bonuses with Kudos.

The Bottom Line
Treat a minimum spend requirement as a budget, not a challenge. Divide it into monthly and weekly targets, move bills you already pay, and skip any offer that needs spending you would not otherwise do.
