To celebrate its 60th anniversary, American Express rolled out a meaningful refresh to its iconic American Express® Gold Card in April 2026. New earning rates, a new travel perk, updated dining partners, and a suite of limited-time anniversary bonuses — all without raising the $325 annual fee. Here's everything you need to know.

What's New on the Amex Gold Card in 2026
1. 5x Points on Prepaid Hotel Bookings (Up from 2x)
The biggest long-term change to the card is a major jump in hotel earning potential. Cardmembers now earn 5x Membership Rewards® Points on prepaid hotel bookings made through AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel App, up from just 2x previously. That puts the Gold Card among the most competitive options for hotel spending across all credit cards. Terms Apply.
One important caveat: the elevated rate only applies to prepaid bookings made through the Amex Travel portal. If you book directly with a hotel brand or have elite status you want recognized, you may be better served booking directly. Portal bookings often don't trigger elite benefits or bonus night certificates.
That said, for travelers who don't have hotel loyalty status or who simply prefer the convenience of Amex Travel, this is a genuinely compelling upgrade.
2. Complimentary Hertz Five Star Status
New to the card entirely: complimentary Hertz Five Star status in the Hertz Gold+ car rental loyalty program. Enrollment is required, and the benefit is easy to activate. Terms Apply.
Hertz Five Star is the mid-tier status level and comes with:
- 25% more points earned on all car rentals
- Space-available vehicle upgrades
- Wider Ultimate Choice aisle availability
- Counter bypass at select locations
This perk was added without an increase in the annual fee, making it a strong win for cardmembers who rent cars regularly.
Note: If you're chasing top-tier President's Circle status, the Capital One Venture X offers that level, though it carries a $395 annual fee.
3. Updated Dining Statement Credit Partners
The $120 annual dining credit (delivered as up to $10 per month) isn't changing in structure or value, but it now works at more places. Enrollment is required. Terms Apply.

The addition of Buffalo Wild Wings has been well received, as it's widely accessible and a realistic spot for everyday dining. Wonder is primarily a northeast U.S. chain, so its usefulness will depend on your location.
Limited-Time 60th Anniversary Perks
American Express is layering on several time-sensitive bonuses to mark the Gold Card's 60th birthday. These aren't permanent benefits, so act before the deadlines.
Uber One Statement Credit (Through October 30, 2026)
Upon enrollment, receive a one-time statement credit of up to $96 to cover an annual Uber One membership. For regular Uber and Uber Eats users, this effectively pays for the subscription while unlocking discounted rides and delivery perks. Terms Apply.
20% Hilton Honors Transfer Bonus (Through May 30, 2026)
Transfer Membership Rewards® Points to Hilton Honors at your normal 1:2 ratio and receive an extra 20% bonus on top. Act quickly — this one expires at the end of May. Terms Apply.
Worth noting: even with the bonus, Hilton points are generally valued lower than Membership Rewards® Points (roughly 0.4 cents vs. 2 cents per point). This is most useful if you have a specific Hilton redemption in mind.
Hotel Collection Anniversary Offers (Through July 15, 2026)
Through mid-July, access special deals at select Hotel Collection properties when booking through Amex Travel, including options like a complimentary third night or 25% off select rooms. A minimum two-night stay is required. Terms Apply.
What Isn't Changing
Before you assume everything's new, here's a quick look at what's staying the same:
- Annual fee: Still $325
- Welcome Offer: As high as 100,000 Membership Rewards® Points. Welcome Offers vary and you may not be eligible for an offer.
- Welcome Offer Spend Requirement: $8,000 within the first six months (increased from $6,000). New applicants will need to spend approximately $1,334/month to hit the threshold. (Kudos calculation based on $8,000 ÷ 6 months.)
- Core earning rates: Still 4x at restaurants worldwide and U.S. supermarkets (up to $50,000/year at restaurants and $25,000/year at supermarkets, then 1x). Terms Apply.
- All other credits and benefits: Unchanged

Is the 2026 Amex Gold Refresh Worth It?
Pros
- 5x hotel earning rate is among the best available at this price point
- No annual fee increase despite meaningful new perks
- Hertz Five Star status adds real value for frequent car renters
- $96 Uber One credit through October adds immediate value for most users
- 4x at restaurants worldwide remains best-in-class for dining
Cons
- 5x hotel rate only applies to prepaid bookings through Amex Travel — not direct hotel bookings
- Wonder dining credit partner has limited geographic reach
- $8,000 Welcome Offer spending requirement is steeper than the previous $6,000 threshold
- Portal hotel bookings may not count toward hotel elite status or loyalty perks
Who Should Get the Amex Gold in 2026
This card makes the most sense if you spend heavily on dining and groceries, travel a few times per year, and don't already hold a top-tier hotel loyalty status. The 4x on restaurants and supermarkets alone can easily justify the $325 annual fee for moderate spenders — roughly $6,500 in combined dining and grocery spend per year gets you there.
If you have Hilton or Marriott elite status that you rely on, you'll want to weigh the 5x portal rate against the loss of status recognition on prepaid bookings. For travelers without hotel loyalty status, the new rate is a straightforward win.
