Chase Freedom Unlimited® Review: Is It Worth It in 2026?
September 27, 2026

The content on this page is accurate as of the posting date; however, some of the offers mentioned may have expired.
Is the Chase Freedom Unlimited® Worth It?
For most people who want one no-annual-fee card that earns more than 1% on everything, yes. The Chase Freedom Unlimited® earns 1.5% cash back on everyday purchases, 3% on dining and drugstores, and 5% on travel booked through Chase Travel℠, with a $0 annual fee and a 0% intro APR period.
It is a weaker pick if you travel abroad, because it charges a 3% foreign transaction fee, or if most of your spending falls outside dining and drugstores, where a flat 2% card earns more. It shines brightest as the everyday card in a Chase lineup alongside a Sapphire card.

Rewards and Welcome Offer
The Chase Freedom Unlimited® pays a higher rate in a few everyday categories and a solid flat rate on everything else. There are no caps on any of these categories.
- 5% cash back on travel purchased through Chase Travel℠
- 3% cash back on dining at restaurants, including takeout and eligible delivery services
- 3% cash back on drugstore purchases
- 1.5% cash back on all other purchases
- 2% total on qualifying Lyft purchases made in the Lyft app through September 30, 2027
There is no minimum to redeem for cash back, and Chase says rewards don't expire as long as your account is open.
Current Welcome Offer
As of October 26, 2026, Chase's public offer is a $200 bonus after you spend $500 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. You are not eligible if you already have this card or received a new cardmember bonus for it in the past 24 months. Chase changes this offer from time to time, so check the offer shown when you apply.
When Does a Flat 2% Card Earn More?
Because the base rate is 1.5%, a flat 2% card wins unless enough of your spending lands in the 3% categories. The break-even point is when about one-third of your spending is dining and drugstore purchases.
For example, on $1,500 a month with $300 on dining, $50 at drugstores and $1,150 on everything else, the Freedom Unlimited® earns about $333 a year, while a flat 2% card earns $360.
Calculation formulated by Kudos, based on the published earn rates applied to the sample monthly spending above for 12 months, excluding welcome offers, Chase Travel℠ and Lyft purchases.
Key Benefits and Protections
0% Intro APR
You get a 0% intro APR for 15 months from account opening on purchases and balance transfers. After that, the variable APR is 18.49% to 27.99%, based on your creditworthiness. A balance transfer fee applies: $5 or 3% of each transfer, whichever is greater, during the intro fee period, then $5 or 5%.
Purchase and Travel Protections
- Purchase protection: covers eligible new purchases for 120 days against damage or theft, up to $500 per item (90 days for New York residents)
- Extended warranty: adds one year to eligible U.S. manufacturer warranties of three years or less
- Trip cancellation and interruption insurance: up to $1,500 per covered traveler and $6,000 per trip
- Auto rental coverage: covers theft and collision damage; in the U.S. it is secondary to your personal auto insurance
- Travel and emergency assistance and Zero Liability protection
DoorDash Perks
You get 6 months of complimentary DashPass when you activate by December 31, 2029. After that, you are automatically enrolled at the then-current monthly rate unless you cancel. Chase Freedom Unlimited® Pros and Cons
Pros
- $0 annual fee with 1.5% back on purchases outside the bonus categories
- 3% on dining and drugstores and 5% on Chase Travel℠, with no caps or activation
- Low $500 spending requirement for the welcome offer
- Long 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers
- Rewards become more flexible when paired with a Sapphire card
Cons
- 3% foreign transaction fee makes it a poor card to use abroad
- A flat 2% card earns more if dining and drugstores are a small share of your spending
- Rewards cannot be transferred to airline or hotel partners on their own
- Auto rental coverage is secondary in the U.S.
Who Should Get the Chase Freedom Unlimited®?
- First rewards card holders who want one simple card with no annual fee and no categories to activate
- Diners and takeout fans who spend a large share of their budget at restaurants and drugstores
- Chase loyalists who hold, or plan to get, a Sapphire card and want an everyday earner for non-bonus spending
- People planning a large purchase who would use the 15-month 0% intro APR
Skip it if you travel internationally often or want the highest flat rate with no thinking. In those cases, a no-foreign-transaction-fee card or a flat 2% card is a better fit.
Chase Freedom Unlimited® vs. Alternatives
Here is how the Chase Freedom Unlimited® stacks up against three popular no-annual-fee cash back cards, based on each issuer's site as of October 26, 2026.
| Card | Everyday rate | Bonus categories | Foreign transaction fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chase Freedom Unlimited® | 1.5% | 5% Chase Travel℠; 3% dining and drugstores | 3% |
| Chase Freedom Flex® | 1% | 5% on up to $1,500 in rotating quarterly categories you activate (then 1%); 5% Chase Travel℠; 3% dining and drugstores | None |
| Citi Double Cash® Card | 2% (1% when you buy, 1% as you pay) | 5% total on hotels, car rentals and attractions booked with Citi Travel | See Citi's terms |
| Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card | 2% cash rewards | None | 3% |
Chase Freedom Flex®
The Chase Freedom Flex® is the better pick if you will activate rotating categories each quarter, and it no longer charges foreign transaction fees. Its base rate is only 1%, so many people hold both Freedom cards. Read our Chase Freedom Flex® review for this quarter's categories.
Citi Double Cash® Card and Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card
The Citi Double Cash® Card earns 2% (1% when you buy and 1% as you pay), and the Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card earns unlimited 2% cash rewards. The Active Cash currently offers a $100 cash rewards bonus after you spend $500 in purchases in the first 3 months, plus a 0% intro APR for 12 months from account opening on purchases and qualifying balance transfers, then a variable APR of 18.74%, 24.74% or 28.74%.

Pairing It With the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card
Chase lets you transfer points to airline and hotel partners only with select cards, such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card. Freedom Unlimited® cardholders who also carry a Sapphire card often move their rewards to that card to unlock transfers. Our guide on how to transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards to travel partners walks through the steps.
How Kudos Helps You Earn More
The Freedom Unlimited® earns 3% at restaurants but only 1.5% at most other stores, so the right card changes with every purchase. The free Kudos browser extension recommends the best card from your wallet at online checkout and can autofill it, and Kudos Boost adds extra cash back at more than 15,000 partner stores.
If you carry several Chase cards, Kudos Premium automatically activates card-linked offers from Chase, Amex, Citi, Bank of America and Wells Fargo, and its Benefits Tracker shows which card credits and perks you have used and what is left.
Chase Freedom Unlimited® FAQ
Is the Chase Freedom Unlimited® a good first credit card?
It is a strong first rewards card for people with good credit, because it has no annual fee, no categories to activate and a low $500 spending requirement for the current welcome offer. If you are building credit from scratch, a starter or secured card may be easier to get.
What credit score do you need for the Chase Freedom Unlimited®?
Chase does not publish a minimum score. Approval generally goes to applicants with good to excellent credit, and Chase also looks at income, existing debt and recent applications.
Does the Chase Freedom Unlimited® have foreign transaction fees?
Yes. It charges 3% of each transaction in U.S. dollars, so use a card with no foreign transaction fees when you travel abroad.
What is the difference between Chase Freedom Unlimited® and Chase Freedom Flex®?
Both have a $0 annual fee and earn 5% on Chase Travel℠ and 3% on dining and drugstores. Freedom Unlimited® earns 1.5% on everything else, while Freedom Flex® earns 1% plus 5% on up to $1,500 in rotating quarterly categories you activate and has no foreign transaction fees.
Can you transfer Chase Freedom Unlimited® rewards to airlines?
Not directly. Transfers to airline and hotel partners require a card that supports them, such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, so pairing the two is the common route.
