The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and the Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard® are both capable travel cards — but they are built for fundamentally different travelers. One rewards flexibility across airlines, hotels, and everyday spending. The other is built around loyalty to Hawaiian Airlines and its growing network. Understanding that distinction is the key to making the right choice.

What's New in 2026

The Hawaiian Airlines loyalty landscape changed significantly heading into 2026, and it directly affects how you should evaluate the Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard®.

HawaiianMiles is now Atmos Rewards. As of October 1, 2025, HawaiianMiles officially merged into Atmos Rewards — the combined loyalty program for both Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines following their merger into Alaska Air Group. All existing HawaiianMiles balances were converted 1:1 into Atmos Rewards points, and HawaiianMiles account numbers were replaced with Atmos Rewards numbers. The Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard® itself remains unchanged in name and benefits — cardholders simply earn Atmos Rewards points on purchases instead of HawaiianMiles.

What this means for card comparison: The Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard® now earns points in a meaningfully larger loyalty ecosystem. Atmos Rewards points can be used across both Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines flights, expanding the card's utility beyond just Hawaii routes. This is a genuine upgrade from the pre-merger standalone HawaiianMiles program.

Application availability: Direct applications for the Barclays-issued Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard® closed in October 2025. The Hawaiian Airlines Bank of Hawaii World Elite Mastercard — a separately co-branded version — remains available through Bank of Hawaii branches and inflight on Hawaiian Airlines. For new Atmos Rewards co-branded cards more broadly, Bank of America now issues the Atmos Rewards Ascent Visa Signature® and related products as the go-forward lineup.

The Chase transfer partner update: Prior to the HawaiianMiles-to-Atmos transition, Hawaiian Airlines was a direct Chase Ultimate Rewards® transfer partner. That transfer pathway no longer applies in the same way now that HawaiianMiles no longer exists as a standalone program. Readers who previously valued the Chase-to-Hawaiian transfer option should factor this into their evaluation.

Head-to-Head — How They Compare

Annual Fee: Both cards carry annual fees at a similar tier. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card's fee is offset across a broad range of spending categories, travel protections, and hotel credits — making it relatively easy to justify for active travelers who spend on dining, travel, and everyday purchases. The Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard®'s fee is easiest to justify for travelers who fly Hawaiian regularly and can take advantage of recurring airline-specific perks. Advantage: depends on your travel patterns.

Rewards Structure: The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card earns flexible Chase Ultimate Rewards® points across multiple bonus categories including dining, travel, select streaming, and online groceries. The Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard® earns Atmos Rewards points with elevated earning on Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines purchases and select everyday categories. For broad everyday spending, the Sapphire Preferred® offers more consistent value across a wider range of purchases. Advantage: Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card for general spenders.

Redemption Flexibility: This is where the cards diverge most clearly. Chase Ultimate Rewards® points transfer to more than a dozen airline and hotel partners or can be used through Chase Travel℠. The Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard® earns Atmos Rewards points, which are most valuable when redeemed for Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines flights. The Atmos ecosystem is larger than the old HawaiianMiles program, but still more limited in flexibility than Chase's transfer partner network. Advantage: Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card.

Airline-Specific Perks: The Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard® offers perks tied directly to the flying experience — companion discounts and baggage benefits that deliver tangible savings for Hawaii travelers. The Sapphire Preferred® offers no carrier-specific perks. For frequent Hawaii flyers, these recurring benefits are genuinely valuable. Advantage: Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard®.

Travel Protections: The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card offers a more comprehensive travel protection suite, including primary auto rental coverage and trip cancellation/interruption insurance. The Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard® offers more limited protections. For travelers who want their card to serve as a meaningful safety net, the Sapphire Preferred® is the stronger option. Advantage: Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card.

Network Reach: Post-merger, Atmos Rewards points now cover both Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines — a significant expansion from the old HawaiianMiles program. However, Chase Ultimate Rewards® still reaches a broader global network of transfer partners including United, Hyatt, British Airways, Singapore Airlines, and more. Advantage: Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card for global travel; Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard® for Pacific routes.

International Travel: Both cards carry no foreign transaction fees. The Sapphire Preferred® has broader international utility given its wider transfer partner network and stronger travel protections. The Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard® is best suited for travel within the Pacific and Hawaii corridors. Advantage: Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card for general international travel.

Decision Framework — Flexible vs. Loyal

Choosing the best travel card for Hawaii flights and flexible rewards 2026

Choose the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card if:

  • You want flexible rewards not tied to a single airline or route
  • You travel beyond Hawaii and want points that work globally
  • You value strong travel protections as a baseline on every trip
  • You're building a Chase card portfolio with long-term flexibility
  • You want access to a broad set of transfer partners including United, Hyatt, British Airways, and more
  • You prefer keeping your redemption options open as your travel patterns change

Choose the Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard® if:

  • You fly to and from Hawaii regularly and want airline-specific perks on those trips
  • You frequently travel with a companion and can take advantage of companion discounts
  • You want to earn Atmos Rewards points across both Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines
  • You're a Hawaii resident or frequent island visitor for whom the card's perks align naturally with your travel habits
  • You want a card with a relatively modest annual fee and clear, recurring value on Hawaii flights

Who Should Choose Each Card?

Who Should Choose the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card?

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is an excellent choice for frequent travelers who want strong rewards and protections without committing to a premium annual fee or a specific airline. It's particularly well suited for travelers who value flexibility — the ability to transfer points to multiple programs, book through a portal, or adapt their redemption strategy as travel plans evolve. It also serves as a strong foundation for the Chase Ultimate Rewards® ecosystem, which remains one of the most valuable points currencies in travel rewards.

We recommend it as the stronger everyday card for travelers whose itineraries aren't concentrated on Hawaii or the Pacific.

Who Should Choose the Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard®?

The Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard® is best suited for travelers who regularly fly to and from Hawaii and can take full advantage of its airline-specific perks. The post-merger expansion into Atmos Rewards meaningfully improves the card's long-term value proposition — points now work across both Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines, giving cardholders a larger network than before. For Hawaii loyalists, this is now a more compelling card than it was prior to the October 2025 loyalty integration.

Tips for Application Success

Before You Apply

  • Check your credit score — Both cards target good to excellent credit. Know your profile before applying to either.
  • Understand Chase's application rules — Chase has an informal rule tied to the number of new personal credit cards you've opened across all issuers in the past two years. Familiarize yourself with this before applying for the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card.
  • Note the Hawaiian card's application status — Direct Barclays applications for the Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard® closed in October 2025. The card remains available through Bank of Hawaii branches and inflight on Hawaiian Airlines. For new Atmos Rewards co-branded cards, Bank of America-issued options are also available.
  • Plan your spending naturally — Make sure you can meet any welcome offer requirement through purchases you'd already make, without forcing unnecessary spending.

Application Strategy

  • Sequence Chase applications carefully — If you're building a Chase card portfolio, plan your application order to make the best use of your available card slots.
  • For Hawaii travel — If flying Hawaiian regularly, applying before a planned trip lets you begin capturing airline-specific perks immediately and meet any welcome offer spending requirement naturally.
  • Consider the Atmos ecosystem — If you're evaluating the Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard® for its loyalty program value, factor in that Atmos Rewards points now cover Alaska Airlines as well — potentially expanding the card's value if you fly either carrier.
  • Think long-term — The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card earns points transferable to more than a dozen partners. Consider how it fits into your broader travel strategy, not just as a standalone card.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still apply for the Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard®?

The direct Barclays-issued Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard® closed direct applications in October 2025. The Hawaiian Airlines Bank of Hawaii World Elite Mastercard — a separately co-branded version — remains available through Bank of Hawaii branches and inflight on Hawaiian Airlines. For the go-forward Atmos Rewards co-branded card lineup, Bank of America now issues the Atmos Rewards Ascent and Summit cards.

Can I transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards® points to Hawaiian Airlines?

The previous direct Chase-to-HawaiianMiles transfer partnership no longer applies in the same way, as HawaiianMiles merged into Atmos Rewards on October 1, 2025. Readers who previously used this transfer path should check the current Chase Ultimate Rewards® transfer partner list for the most up-to-date options. Chase does not currently list Atmos Rewards as a direct transfer partner.

What is Atmos Rewards and how does it affect the Hawaiian Airlines card?

Atmos Rewards is the combined loyalty program for both Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines, launched October 1, 2025 following their merger into Alaska Air Group. All HawaiianMiles accounts were converted 1:1 into Atmos Rewards. The Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard® card name and benefits remain unchanged — cardholders now simply earn Atmos Rewards points on purchases instead of HawaiianMiles, with those points redeemable across both Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines flights.

Which card is better for booking flights to Hawaii?

It depends on your loyalty and travel frequency. The Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard® offers direct airline perks — companion discounts and baggage benefits — that are most valuable for travelers who fly Hawaiian regularly. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card offers broader flexibility, with points redeemable through the Chase Travel℠ portal or transferred to multiple partners. For travelers who fly Hawaii routes exclusively and regularly, the co-branded card's perks are hard to replicate. For travelers who want flexibility across carriers and destinations, the Sapphire Preferred® is the stronger long-term choice.

Can I hold both cards at the same time?

Yes. Since the cards are issued by different banks — Chase and Barclays respectively — there is no issuer conflict in holding both simultaneously. This can be a practical combination for frequent Hawaii travelers who want to capture airline-specific perks on Hawaiian flights while earning flexible Chase Ultimate Rewards® points on all other spending.

Which card offers better travel protections?

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card offers a more comprehensive travel protection package, including primary auto rental coverage and trip cancellation/interruption insurance. The Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard® offers more limited travel protections. For travelers who want their card to serve as a meaningful safety net on every trip, the Sapphire Preferred® is the stronger option.

What credit score do I need for each card?

Both cards generally require good to excellent credit for approval. Applicants with strong credit history, low utilization, and no recent negative marks will have the best approval odds. Chase also considers your recent application activity across all issuers when reviewing Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card applications.

Is the Atmos Rewards program better than the old HawaiianMiles program?

For most cardholders, yes — the Atmos Rewards integration is a meaningful improvement. Points no longer expire under Atmos Rewards, the earning network now covers both Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines, and the broader Oneworld Alliance connection via Alaska gives Atmos members access to a wider range of international partners. For Hawaii residents, the Huaka'i by Hawaiian program offers additional kamaʻaina-specific benefits alongside Atmos membership.
