Discover to Capital One Transition: What's Changing and What to Do Now

A clear breakdown of the Discover-Capital One card migration and what cardholders should know.

July 1, 2025

If you've got a Discover card, you've probably already heard the news: your account is moving over to Capital One. This is part of the $35 billion merger between the two companies, which officially closed back in May 2025, and the account migrations are now rolling out in waves.

Some cardholders have already been switched over. Others won't move until later this year or into 2027. Capital One hasn't said publicly which cards go first, but plenty of users have reported being told to expect the change around July 27. If you haven't heard anything yet, that just means your turn hasn't come up.

Here's what's actually changing, what's staying the same, and how we're approaching it on the Kudos side.

What’s Staying the Same

The good news first: your card itself isn't going anywhere.

  • Your card number stays the same. Primary cardholders keep their existing 16-digit number and physical card.
  • Your rewards stay intact. Cash back balances carry over, and features like the 5% category bonuses and year-end match program continue.
  • No new fees or rate changes. Your $0 annual fee, APR, and credit limit all remain what they were.
  • Your credit won't take a hit. The migration isn't reported as a new account, so your account open date and credit history stay put.

What’s Actually Changing

The biggest shift is where you go to manage your account. Once your card migrates, you'll log in and manage everything through the Capital One app and website instead of Discover's. Discover.com sticks around, but as a marketing site rather than your account portal.

A few smaller things to know:

  • Rewards toward minimum payments go away. You can still redeem for a statement credit, it just won't count toward your minimum due.
  • Gift card redemption minimums go up, from $5 to $25.
  • Apple Pay's "Pay with Rewards" feature disappears, and recurring Apple Pay subscriptions may need a second look after the switch.
  • Authorized users and joint account holders get new physical cards with their own unique numbers, mailed to the primary cardholder. Previously, authorized users shared the primary number.

On the upside, once your account moves, you also pick up access to Capital One Travel, Capital One Entertainment, Capital One Offers, virtual card numbers, and CreditWise if you were using Discover's credit monitoring.

The Part Nobody’s Talking About: Syncing Headaches

Here's something we've been watching closely that hasn't gotten much coverage yet. Users of budgeting and finance apps have started reporting friction as their accounts move over. Common issues include: transaction syncing breaking mid-migration, some merchant names showing up blanked out on the new Capital One connection, and having to manually reconnect or transfer transaction history to avoid duplicate entries.

None of this is unique to any one app. It's a natural side effect of a bank-level data migration this size. But it's exactly the kind of thing that can quietly mess with your rewards tracking if nobody's watching for it.

More:

How Kudos Is Handling the Transition

We know a lot of you use Kudos specifically to keep tabs on which card earns the most in which category, and a bank-level system migration like this is the kind of thing that can throw that off if we're not paying attention.

Here's where we are right now:

  • We're actively auditing how Discover cards behave in Kudos as accounts migrate, so your card recommendations and reward tracking stay accurate through the switch.
  • We're testing our data connections against real migrated accounts to catch sync issues, missing transactions, or merchant mismatches early, rather than after they've caused a headache.
  • We don't have a fixed date for when every user's card will move. Capital One is controlling that timeline, and it's happening in waves through 2027. What we can promise is that we're not waiting until it breaks to figure it out.

We'll keep this page and our email updates current as we learn more. If your Discover card is part of Kudos and something looks off after your account migrates, whether that's a missing transaction, an outdated card name, or rewards not tracking right, let our support team know. We'd rather hear about it from you early than have you quietly lose out on cash back you earned.

What You Should Do in the Meantime

  1. Download the Capital One app now, even if you can't log in with your Discover credentials yet. It saves you a step later.
  2. Double-check your contact info on your Discover account. Capital One says this info carries over automatically, so it's worth making sure it's current.
  3. Note your payment due date. Most stay the same, but some are shifting to avoid technical issues during the transition.
  4. Check your autopay settings before and after your account moves, just to make sure nothing dropped.
  5. Keep an eye on your Kudos recommendations for that card in the weeks around your migration date. If something looks off, tell us.

We'll keep updating this as more of the migration plays out. In the meantime, your card, your rewards, and your Kudos tracking aren't going anywhere; just the login screen is changing.
