Best credit cards with rotating 5% cash back categories compared for 2026 including Chase Freedom Flex and Discover it

Rotating category credit cards offer some of the highest cash back rates available — up to 5% on everyday spending — without charging an annual fee. The trade-off is a bit of active management: most require quarterly activation, have a spending cap on the bonus rate, and feature categories you can't always predict in advance. If you're willing to spend a few minutes each quarter setting up your rewards, these cards can add hundreds of dollars per year in cash back.

This guide covers the five best rotating category cards of 2026, the current Q1 and Q2 2026 bonus categories for major issuers, tips to maximize your earnings, and honest guidance on who should and shouldn't bother with these cards.

What's New in 2026

A few notable updates affect the rotating category landscape this year:

  • Chase Freedom Flex® Q2 2026 categories (April–June): Amazon, Chase Travel℠, Whole Foods Market, and Feeding America donations — a strong quarter for online shoppers and grocery spenders.
  • Discover it® Cash Back Q2 2026 categories (April–June): Restaurants and home improvement stores — well-timed for spring home projects and dining out.
  • Citi Custom Cash® Card limited-time bonus: Through June 30, 2026, cardholders earn an additional 4% cash back on hotels, car rentals, and attractions booked through the Citi Travel℠ portal. This stacks on top of the standard 5% in your top category, making it a temporarily elevated travel rewards card.
  • Chase Freedom® is no longer open to new applicants. If you want rotating 5% categories from Chase, the Chase Freedom Flex® is the current product to apply for.

Current 2026 Rotating Categories Calendar

Knowing what's active this quarter is half the battle. Here's where things stand as of Q2 2026:

Chase Freedom Flex® 2026 Categories

Q1 2026 (January–March) featured Norwegian Cruise Line, dining, and American Heart Association donations. Q2 2026 (April–June) is one of the stronger quarters for online shoppers: Amazon, Chase Travel℠, Whole Foods Market, and Feeding America donations all qualify. You can activate Q2 categories through June 14, 2026, and earn 5% on up to $1,500 in combined bonus category purchases, then 1%. Q3 and Q4 categories are yet to be announced — Chase typically reveals them shortly before each quarter begins.

Discover It Cash Back Credit Card 2026 Categories

Q1 2026 (January–March) covered grocery stores, wholesale clubs, and select streaming services — a strong quarter for everyday essentials. Q2 2026 (April–June) brings restaurants and home improvement stores, well-timed for spring dining and home projects. Activation is required and earns 5% on up to $1,500 in combined purchases per quarter, then 1%. Discover typically announces Q3 categories on June 1, so keep an eye out if you're planning ahead.

Tips to Maximize Rotating Category Cards

1. Activate on the first day of each quarter. All cards that require activation — Chase Freedom Flex® and Discover it® Cash Back — allow you to activate before the quarter even starts. Log in on January 1, April 1, July 1, and October 1 and activate immediately. Better yet, set calendar reminders or enable email alerts from your issuer. Forgetting to activate is the single most costly mistake rotating card holders make.

2. Pair with a flat-rate card for non-bonus spending. Rotating category cards earn only 1% on purchases outside the bonus categories. Pair your 5% card with a no-annual-fee flat-rate card earning 2% on everything else. Use your rotating card exclusively in its bonus categories; use the flat-rate card for everything else. After hitting the quarterly cap, switch the flat-rate card for that category too.

3. Front-load your category spending before the cap. If a quarter's bonus category aligns with a major upcoming purchase — home improvement in spring, electronics in Q4 — prioritize that spending while the cap resets. The $1,500 quarterly limit on Chase and Discover can run out quickly for high spenders.

4. Stack two rotating cards to cover more categories. Chase Freedom Flex® and Discover it® Cash Back often feature different categories in the same quarter. Holding both effectively doubles the categories you can earn 5% on. For Q2 2026, Freedom Flex covers Amazon and Whole Foods while Discover covers restaurants and home improvement — four distinct 5% categories from just two no-annual-fee cards.

5. Know the current quarter's categories before every shopping trip. A quick glance at the current bonus categories before a major purchase can meaningfully change which card you use. Apps like the Kudos Smart Wallet can automatically suggest which card in your wallet earns the most for each purchase at checkout — removing the guesswork entirely.

6. Use welcome offers strategically. In year one with the Discover it® Cash Back, the Cashback Match doubles everything you earn. Concentrate as much spending as possible on it during that first year. Similarly, use the Chase Freedom Flex® welcome offer as an incentive to shift your first three months' spending to the card.

Who Should Skip Rotating Category Cards?

Rotating category cards aren't for everyone. Consider a flat-rate card instead if:

  • You rarely remember to activate. Missing a quarter's activation on Chase or Discover means earning only 1% during those months. If you're not the type to log in regularly, the Citi Custom Cash® Card's auto-rotation is a better fit — or a flat-rate 2% card that requires zero management.
  • Your spending is highly concentrated in one category year-round. A card with a permanent 3%–6% bonus in that category (e.g., a grocery card or a dining card) will likely outperform rotating categories that may or may not match your spend.
  • You travel internationally often. Several rotating cards carry foreign transaction fees, and Discover has limited international acceptance. A no-foreign-transaction-fee travel card is more practical for frequent international travelers.
  • You want premium perks. Rotating category cards are no-fee, no-frills products. If you want airport lounge access, travel insurance, or hotel status, a premium travel card is a better fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a rotating category credit card?

A rotating category credit card offers high cash back — typically 5% — in specific spending categories that change periodically, usually each quarter. Common examples include grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, Amazon, and streaming services. Outside those bonus categories, the card earns a base rate, usually 1%. Some cards (like Citi Custom Cash® Card) rotate categories automatically based on your spending; others (like Chase Freedom Flex® and Discover it® Cash Back) require manual activation each quarter.

Are rotating category credit cards worth it?

For most people who are willing to activate quarterly and adjust their spending accordingly, yes. Earning 5% on categories you already spend in regularly can add $200–$400 or more per year — with no annual fee. The effort required is minimal: a few clicks per quarter. The main risk is forgetting to activate and defaulting to 1% on purchases you expected to earn 5% on.

What happens if I spend over the quarterly 5% cap?

You simply earn the base rate (1% on most cards) on any spending above the cap in that category. There's no penalty — your accumulated rewards remain intact. The cap resets at the start of each new quarter.

Do I need to activate categories every quarter for every card?

For Chase Freedom Flex® and Discover it® Cash Back, yes — quarterly activation is required and not retroactive. For Citi Custom Cash® Card, no activation is needed. For U.S. Bank Cash+® Visa Signature® Card, you select your categories each quarter (which is a form of activation), but if you don't change them, your previous selection carries forward. Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards Credit Card doesn't require quarterly activation, but you need to log in if you want to change your 3% category.

Can I have multiple rotating category credit cards?

Yes, and many rewards-focused cardholders do. The Chase Freedom Flex® and Discover it® Cash Back are among the most popular pairings because their categories often differ by quarter, effectively expanding the range of purchases earning 5%. Multiple rotating cards also mean multiple spending caps, allowing you to earn 5% on a broader total spend across the year.

What are the current Q2 2026 rotating categories?

As of April 2026: Chase Freedom Flex® earns 5% on Amazon, Chase Travel℠, Whole Foods Market, and Feeding America donations through June 30, 2026. Discover it® Cash Back earns 5% on restaurants and home improvement stores through June 30, 2026. Both require activation. See each issuer's website for full terms and eligible merchants.
