PayPal Is Killing Its Cash-Back Redemption Option Starting August 1

PayPal Rewards dropped its cash-back redemption option effective August 1, 2026. Anyone who wanted to convert Rewards points into cash — to their PayPal balance, a linked bank account, a linked debit card, or a PayPal Savings account — needed to do so before 11:59 p.m. Pacific on that date.
What's Left
After the cutoff, the only ways to redeem PayPal Rewards points are spending them directly at checkout with a participating merchant or converting them to gift cards. Cash is off the table entirely.
Why This Is a Bigger Deal Than It Sounds
This is a real shift for anyone treating PayPal Rewards points as a cash-back equivalent. Under the new structure, PayPal Rewards functions more like merchant store credit than a cash-back program, since the value stays locked inside PayPal's own ecosystem rather than being usable anywhere you'd normally spend cash. It's part of a broader move by PayPal to tighten how its rewards and funding terms work, alongside adjustments to crypto-related terms announced around the same time.
Cash back that only works inside one company's ecosystem is worth less than cash back you can actually see and use. Kudos tracks the real cashback and rewards balance on every card, so you always know what you've actually earned.
What It Doesn’t Affect
This change is specific to PayPal Rewards points earned inside PayPal's own program — it doesn't touch the cash-back rates advertised on bank-issued credit cards, even ones that happen to fund purchases through PayPal. If your card statement shows cash back from Chase, Amex, Citi, or similar, that's unaffected; this is purely about PayPal's own points currency.
The Takeaway for Anyone Still Holding PayPal Rewards Points
Since the cash options are already gone as of this writing, the priority now is making sure you're not letting points sit unused. Check your balance, and if a gift card to a store you'd actually shop at is available, redeeming sooner rather than later avoids the value sitting idle in a program that now only pays out in store credit and gift cards.
