‍

We checked each merchant in October 2026 against its own help pages and app listings where possible, and otherwise against Apple Maps listings and recent news reports. Acceptance can vary by location, so look for the contactless symbol or the Apple Pay logo at the register before you tap.

How to Earn More When You Pay With Apple Pay

‍

Apple Pay is only a wallet. The rewards still come from the card you load into it, so the card you pick at each store matters more than the way you pay.

‍

  • Match the card to the store: A grocery store purchase can earn several times more on a card with a grocery bonus than on a flat-rate card.
  • Set a default card with care: Apple Wallet uses your default card unless you switch before you tap, so pick the card that earns the most on your most common purchases.
  • Check online checkouts too: Many stores on this list accept Apple Pay online, where the free Kudos browser extension shows which of your cards earns the most at checkout.

‍

FAQ

‍

Which major stores do not take Apple Pay?

Most large national chains now take Apple Pay. The usual exceptions are discount and dollar stores, such as most Dollar General locations, and smaller regional chains that have not added contactless card readers.

‍

How can I tell if a store takes Apple Pay?

Look for the contactless symbol (four curved lines) or the Apple Pay logo on the card reader. In the Apple Maps app, many business listings also show whether Apple Pay is accepted.

‍

Can I use Apple Pay if a store only takes contactless cards?

Usually yes. Apple Pay works on the same contactless terminals that accept tap-to-pay cards, though a store can choose to block mobile wallets.

‍

Does Apple Pay earn credit card rewards?

Yes. Purchases made with Apple Pay earn the same rewards as the card you use, because the store sees the transaction as a normal card payment.

‍

How often is this list updated?

We last checked every merchant in October 2026. Payment options change, so confirm with the store if you are unsure.
