Venmo Credit Card Rewards Change: What's New in 2026

The Venmo Credit Card new rewards are live for new applicants, and they work very differently from the old version. The card used to pay 3% on whatever you spent the most on each month. Now it pays 3% on a fixed set of categories, with an extra 1% when friends pay you back through Venmo.

What the Venmo Credit Card New Rewards Pay
- 3% on dining and entertainment: restaurants, takeout, delivery, bars, movie theaters, concerts, amusement parks, digital goods and subscription streaming services.
- 3% when you pay with Venmo: checking out with Venmo online, paying a business on Venmo, or paying someone for goods and services.
- 4% on split dining and entertainment: an extra 1% when you split the purchase in the Venmo app and your friends pay you back, as long as the split is completed within 30 days of the purchase.
- 1% on everything else: groceries, gas, travel, utilities and all other purchases.
The card still has no annual fee and no foreign transaction fee, and cash back lands in your Venmo balance automatically.
Kudos tells you at checkout whether the Venmo Credit Card or another card in your wallet earns more on that purchase, so the 1% categories do not quietly eat your rewards.

What Venmo Removed
The old structure paid 3% on your top eligible spending category each billing cycle and 2% on your second, with 1% on the rest. You did not pick the categories. The card picked them for you based on where your money went.
That automatic setup was the card's main draw. If groceries or gas were your biggest monthly spend, they earned 3% with no work. Under the new terms, both fall to 1%.
One card rarely covers everything. Here is how a three-card setup splits your spending. Build a three-card cash back setup.
Do Existing Venmo Cardholders Keep the Old Rewards?
For now, yes. The change applies to new applicants, and existing cardholders are keeping the old top-category structure. Venmo has not published an end date, so plan as if it could change. If you already have the card and your top category is groceries or gas, hold on to it and keep an eye on your statements and any notice from Synchrony Bank, the card's issuer.
Who Wins and Who Loses Under the New Rewards
If you eat out often and split tabs with friends on Venmo anyway, the new card is better. Dining and entertainment are locked at 3%, and the split bonus pushes them to 4%. If your biggest spend is groceries, the math turns against you. On $500 a month at the grocery store, the old card could earn $15 a month at 3%. The new card earns $5 at 1%, a $120 difference over a year.
Calculation formulated by Kudos, based on $500 in monthly grocery spending at the old 3% top-category rate versus the new 1% rate, over 12 months.
For a grocery-heavy wallet, a dedicated supermarket card will beat the new structure. For a broad catch-all, a flat 2% card like the Citi Double Cash® Card beats the new 1% base rate on everything outside dining and entertainment.
The Bottom Line
The new Venmo Credit Card is built for dining and going out, with a bonus for splitting the bill. If you already hold the old version and it pays 3% on groceries or gas, keep it. If you are applying fresh, make sure your restaurant and entertainment spending is big enough to carry it.
