Credit Card Benefits Ending in 2026: Everything Disappearing and What to Do

The list of credit card benefits ending in 2026 got longer this month. Issuers have spent the year raising annual fees while quietly trimming the protections and perks that justified them, and the removals rarely come with an announcement you will actually see.
Here is what has gone, what is going, and what to do before each date.
[[ COMPARE_CARD * {"ids": ["2883", "509", "106"], "bestCategoryIds":["17", "18", "19"], "bestForTexts":["Lost Phone Coverage", "Hyatt Ratio Changing", "Losing Lounge Access"]} ]]
Benefit changes rarely arrive by email. Knowing where issuers are heading helps you see them coming. Read the 2026 credit card trends.
Chase Freedom Flex Cell Phone Protection (Ended September 20, 2026)
Chase removed cell phone protection from the Chase Freedom Flex® effective September 20, 2026. Its Guide to Benefits covers losses only through September 19.
The benefit paid up to $800 per approved claim with a $50 deductible, capped at two approved claims per 12 month period and $1,000 in total benefits per year. Coverage required paying your monthly wireless bill with the card.
What to do: if your phone bill is on autopay to the Freedom Flex specifically for the coverage, move it to another card.
This is the removal most likely to catch people out, because cell phone protection is passive. Nobody checks it until they crack a screen. If you have a damaged phone waiting on a claim, the loss has to have occurred on or before September 19, 2026.
Kudos tracks what each of your cards earns and recommends the right one at checkout, so when an issuer changes the rules your everyday spending adjusts without you rebuilding your wallet from scratch.
A higher annual fee is not automatically a reason to cancel. Downgrading usually protects your credit history. See when to downgrade instead.
Amex Platinum Lufthansa Lounge Access (Ends October 1, 2026)
Holders of The Platinum Card® from American Express lose Lufthansa lounge access on October 1, 2026. September 30 is the last day the card alone gets you through the door. This lands in the same year the Platinum Card annual fee rose from $695 to $895 (See Rates & Fees), which is the pattern worth noticing: higher fee, fewer lounges.
What to do: if Lufthansa lounges were a meaningful part of your travel routine, reprice the card against what you actually use now rather than what it offered when you applied.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred Hyatt Transfer Ratio (Ends October 1, 2026)
The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card loses its 1:1 World of Hyatt transfer ratio on October 1, 2026.
Hyatt has long been the single best use of Chase Ultimate Rewards, so this is the most consequential devaluation on the list for anyone holding points rather than chasing perks. We covered the deadline in detail in our guide to what to do before October 1.
What to do: if you are a Hyatt loyalist with a specific stay in mind, price it and transfer before October 1. Do not speculatively move your entire Ultimate Rewards balance into Hyatt to beat the deadline. Points stranded in a hotel program are worth less than flexible points, even at a worse ratio.
A transfer ratio change is a different animal from a perk removal. A lost lounge costs you a comfortable hour. A worse ratio quietly reprices every point you already hold.
Fidelity Rewards Visa Lost Luggage Coverage (Ends January 2027)
The Fidelity® Rewards Visa Signature® Card drops $3,000 of lost luggage coverage in January 2027. In exchange, cardholders gain rental car status.
That is a genuine trade rather than a pure cut, and which side you land on depends on whether you check bags more often than you rent cars.
What to do: nothing urgent, but if the luggage coverage was the reason you booked flights on this card, you have a few months to find a travel card whose baggage protection you have actually read.
The Chase Sapphire Reserve for Business Advertising Cap
Chase limited the Chase Sapphire Reserve for Business℠ 3x advertising category to $1 million in annual spending, then 1x. For the overwhelming majority of cardholders this changes nothing. For the small number of businesses running serious ad spend through the card, it is a hard ceiling that did not exist before.
What to do: if you are anywhere near that number, model what your spend earns above the cap before renewal.
The Annual Fees Went Up at the Same Time
The benefit cuts did not come with cheaper cards. Over 2025 and 2026:
- The Platinum Card® from American Express: annual fee rose from $695 to $895 (See Rates & Fees)
- Chase Sapphire Reserve®: rose from $550 to $795
- Chase Sapphire Reserve® authorized users: rose from $75 to $195
- Citi Strata Elite℠ Card: launched at $595 as Citi re-entered the premium market
For the Chase Sapphire Reserve®: points are not earned until after the first $300 is spent annually on travel purchases. The first $300 goes toward the $300 Annual Travel Credit.
Analysts covering the space expect 2026 to be the year a meaningful number of cardholders reach their renewal date, look at the new number, and downgrade.
Not Everything Got Worse
Two things improved in the same week, which is worth saying plainly.
- Chase removed the 3% foreign transaction fee from the Chase Freedom Flex® on September 20, 2026, making a no annual fee cash back card usable abroad for the first time.
- Citi added Japan Airlines as a 1:1 transfer partner on September 20, its 16th airline partner, launching with a 30% bonus through October 24.
Issuers are not uniformly cutting. They are reallocating, moving value away from insurance style protections that few people claim and toward earning rates and partnerships that show up in marketing.
That is mostly fine, with one exception. Protections are the part of a card you cannot replace on short notice, because you only discover you needed them after something has already gone wrong. An earning rate you can beat by putting a different card in the slot tomorrow.
How to Audit Your Own Wallet Before a Benefit Disappears
You will not catch these changes by reading the news, because most of them arrive as a Guide to Benefits update. A short annual pass catches almost everything:
- List what each card is actually for. If you cannot say in one sentence why a card is in your wallet, that is the card to examine first.
- Check which bills are on autopay to which card, and why. Wireless bills attached to a card for cell phone protection are the most common casualty of a benefits change.
- Reprice every annual fee at renewal, not at application. The question is what the card offers now, not what it offered when you signed up.
- Read the Guide to Benefits once a year. It is tedious and it is where the changes actually live.
- Downgrade before you cancel. Closing a card shortens your average account age and drops your available credit. A downgrade usually keeps both.
The Bottom Line
The credit card benefits ending in 2026 follow a clear pattern. Protections you rarely claim are being cut, annual fees are climbing, and value is shifting toward earn rates and transfer partners. The two dates that need action are October 1, for the Hyatt transfer ratio and the Lufthansa lounges, and right now, if your wireless bill is sitting on a Freedom Flex for coverage that no longer exists. Everything else can wait for your next renewal, as long as you actually reprice the card when it arrives.
