Why the Companion Pass Still Matters

The Southwest Companion Pass lets you bring a designated companion on any Southwest flight for just taxes and fees, on both cash and award bookings. It's valid for the rest of the year you earn it plus the entire following year.

‍

To earn a Companion Pass, you need 135,000 qualifying points in a calendar year. Each Southwest card gives you a 10,000-point annual boost, meaning you only need 125,000 on your own.

‍

If you open the Priority card and hit the welcome bonus spend requirement, you'll be more than three-quarters of the way there. Even the Plus card could get you roughly two-thirds of the qualifying points you need.

‍

One important note: points transferred from Chase Ultimate Rewards or Bilt do not count toward Companion Pass qualification. Only points earned directly through Southwest or its cobranded cards count.

Southwest Card Application Rules

Before applying, make sure you're eligible:

• You cannot currently hold any Southwest consumer credit card
• You cannot have received a welcome bonus from a Southwest consumer card in the past 24 months
• Southwest cards are issued by Chase, so the Chase 5/24 rule applies. If you've opened 5 or more cards from any bank in the past 24 months, approval is unlikely
• These cards generally require a good to excellent credit score (670+)

Should You Apply Right Now?

Yes, if:

• You fly Southwest regularly and don't have a card already
• You're working toward a Companion Pass and want to accelerate earning
• You can comfortably meet the minimum spend requirement

Wait, if:

‍

• You'd rather hold out for an offer that includes an automatic Companion Pass (these do come around periodically)
• You're close to or over the Chase 5/24 limit
• You already earned a Southwest welcome bonus in the last 24 months

These aren't all-time best offers. Historically, there have been 100,000-point bonuses and offers that include an automatic Companion Pass. But for anyone who has been on the fence, a 50%+ increase over standard offers is worth paying attention to.
