AMEX Platinum Trip Cancellation Insurance: Coverage, Limits, and How to File

Most American Express Platinum Card® cardholders have no idea this benefit exists. Here's what it covers, what disqualifies you, and how to file a claim before you lose your money.
Trip cancellations happen. Flights get grounded, family emergencies come out of nowhere, and jury duty doesn't care that you booked a nonrefundable resort three months ago. What most AMEX Platinum cardholders don't realize is that their card already has a built-in safety net: Trip Cancellation Insurance worth up to $10,000 per trip.

What Is AMEX Platinum Trip Cancellation Insurance?
AMEX Platinum Trip Cancellation Insurance is a built-in travel protection benefit that reimburses you for nonrefundable, prepaid trip costs when your trip is canceled or interrupted for a covered reason.
Coverage limits:
- Up to $10,000 per covered trip
- Up to $20,000 per eligible card per calendar year
This isn't a purchased add-on. It comes with your AMEX Platinum card at no extra charge, and most cardholders never use it because they don't know it exists.

What Does AMEX Trip Cancellation Insurance Cover?
Coverage kicks in when your trip is canceled or interrupted for a qualifying reason. Per AMEX card terms, covered reasons include:
- Sickness: You, your travel companion, or an immediate family member becomes ill
- Injury: A covered injury prevents travel
- Family death: Death of an immediate family member
- Severe weather: Conditions that ground your flight or make travel unsafe
- Jury duty: A court summons that conflicts with your departure date
If your cancellation falls into one of these categories, you can file a claim instead of eating the cost of your trip.
What Doesn't AMEX Trip Cancellation Insurance Cover?
Splitting payment with a non-AMEX card. To get coverage, you have to pay the full cost of the trip with your eligible AMEX card, or with a combination of the card and AMEX Membership Rewards points. Pay any portion with a debit card, a different credit card, or cash, and coverage breaks.
Change-of-mind cancellations. Deciding you don't want to go is not a covered reason. Neither is general fear of travel.
Pre-existing conditions (in some cases). Review the full benefit terms for how pre-existing medical conditions are handled.
Always confirm coverage details with AMEX directly, since benefit terms can change.
How to File an AMEX Trip Cancellation Claim
Step 1: Call AMEX Travel Insurance: Call the number on the back of your AMEX Platinum card and ask for a Trip Cancellation claim. Don't assume general customer service will route you correctly. Ask specifically for the travel insurance or benefits line.
Step 2: Document your covered reason: Pull together anything that proves your cancellation qualifies:
- A doctor's note or hospital records for sickness or injury
- A death certificate for a family death
- Official weather advisories or airline cancellation notices for severe weather
- A copy of your jury summons
Step 3: Collect your receipts and booking confirmations: You'll need to show what you paid and what's nonrefundable. Gather:
- Original booking confirmations for flights, hotel, tours, and activities
- Proof of any refunds you've already received (you can only claim the nonrefundable portion)
- Credit card statements showing the charges on your eligible AMEX card
Step 4: Submit before the deadline: AMEX has a filing window. Submit your claim as soon as the cancellation happens, not after you've tried everything else.
Filing a Claim vs. Asking for a Refund
These are not the same thing. When you file a claim through your card's travel insurance, you're using a benefit you've already paid for through your annual fee. You're not asking a hotel or airline for a favor. You're submitting a claim that AMEX is contractually obligated to process.
If your trip is nonrefundable, you don't have to beg. You have a policy with defined covered reasons and defined limits.
How to Make Sure You're Covered Before You Book
Coverage doesn't work retroactively, so set yourself up before you travel:
- Put the entire trip on your AMEX Platinum. All prepaid, nonrefundable expenses should go on the eligible card.
- Check the benefit guide before your trip. Terms get updated, so confirm current limits and covered reasons at the time of booking.
- Save all booking confirmations. You'll need them if you file.
Bottom Line
